Welcome to Histon Hardware - Our
Company History
S.M.Bishop was established in 1933 by Sidney Matthew Bishop,
who started the business off by repairing bicycles from
the front room of his end terraced house.
Time moved on and Sid moved into a purpose built unit
next to his home and started selling bikes, then tools,
then onto household and garden supplies and so on.
In 1977 Sid Bishop died and left the business in charge
of Paul James, a young lad who had worked for Sid during
his school years and had progressed through the company.
During the spring of 1985, Bishop's at the Station road site was bursting at
the seams and was rapidly out growing its premises!
So the bicycles stayed at the Station Road site, whilst the tools, household
and garden products all moved to what was to be known as the "DIY and Builders
Merchants" on Cambridge Road, Histon (3/4 mile away).
From here the company has progressed into many different areas, including large
building contract tendering, kitchens and bedrooms, household appliances, joinery
and conservatories and much much more! Whilst the Station Road shop has evolved
into a modern centre for cycle, camping and leisure supplies.
Histon Hardware is now part of buying groups from all around the world, which
boasts a range of hundreds of thousands of different products from quality worldwide
manufacturers.
Today Histon Hardware is a world wide recognised company,
selling products to the local community, the UK, Europe
and around the World! This shows that a small UK independent
can be summed up with one word that shows the type of service
and products at the right prices that people everywhere
appreciate - QUALITY!
